History of the Ozona Fire Department

The need for better fire protection in Crockett County became apparent as the community grew. As always needs were met when a group of volunteers gathered in the Spring of 1947 and with 19 Charter Members, The Ozona Volunteer Fire Department was formed. Dick Henderson was elected president. Arthur Kyle was vice President and Bill Cooper, Fire Chief. Miller Robinson was first assistant Fire Chief, and Gene Williams second assistant Chief. Oscar Kost was Fire Marshall, Charles Ratiliff, Secretary. and Rev. Clifton Tennison, Chaplin. The charter members of the department include Bill Cooper, Gene Williams, Charles Ratliff, Oscar Kost, Bill Bergfeld, Miller Robinson, Arthur Kyle, James Semmler, Jim Dudley, Eddie Bower, Ted Doggett, Bill Hannah, Dick Henderson, D.F. Brownrigg, Gene Ramirez, Ed Cranfill, V.O. Earnest, Beecher Montgomery, and H.E. Kunkel.

A new fire station was completed in January 1951, and soon a full-time fireman took up residence in the three-room apartment provided in the complete facility.
Many a ranchman has been grateful for the efficient way in which grass fires are controlled. Few town fires have gained much under the still efficient volunteer men who always respond immediately to the siren's signals.
